May General Meeting: Your Favorite or Interesting Family Heirloom or Ancestor
May 17 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

We all have family heirlooms and ancestors, but what we will be doing is just picking out one to share with your fellow members with a brief three-minute story about it. This might be a pocket watch, special photo, quilt, hat, or lamp. All you need to do is have a couple of photos that you can copy and send to Bob Hazard at ra_hazard@att.net (use the underline/underscore in between the ra and hazard). He will develop the visual program for the May 17th event.

You will also have the opportunity to share something interesting about one of your ancestors. If you have one or two photos of the person please scan them and email them to Bob hazard. If it’s not scanned, you can mail the photo to Georgine Herd (herdg@aol.com, email her for address) and she will carefully scan it and return it to you. Your story is important to share and we want to hear it. When your photo appears on the screen during the program you can tell us something about your heirloom or ancestor. The stories are what make them special.

Please email Bob Hazard by May 12th with your name, photo(s), item description, and something about your treasure so we can develop the slideshow accordingly. Items for the program will be incorporated on a first-come, first-served basis. We will limit the heirloom or ancestor stories to three minutes. Looking forward to another fun evening.

You will be receiving your Zoom invitation the weekend just before the meeting.  If you are not a member and would like to attend, please email CVGSEvents20@gmail.com.

June CIG: “Give Your Genealogy a Checkup”
Jun 3 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

“Give Your Genealogy a Checkup” by Georgine Herd

June 3, 1:00 pm, Zoom room opens at 12:50 pm PST

Your family tree may have unnoticed mistakes — There’s a way to find out, and it is something you should make at least an annual habit of doing… give your genealogy a checkup.

June’s CIG meeting will address this issue — Georgine Herd will present how to run Data Error reports and fix many of the errors.

Watch for the handout and zoom link, which will be emailed the evening of June 2.

If you are not a CIG member, contact Shirley Vivion to be added to the CIG email distribution list: CVGSResearch@gmail.com

VCGS DNA SIG: Leah Larkin
Jun 18 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am
Leah Larkin:  What Are The Odds?  (WATO)

What Are the Odds? (WATO) is a revolutionary tool for “targets” with unknown parentage (or grandparentage). It lets you incorporate shared autosomal DNA data from multiple matches and multiple testing companies into a tree-based analysis to determine where the target most likely fits into the tree. Armed with this information, you can better economize on your research efforts and additional DNA testing. It’s a game-changer!

Leah Larkin earned her Ph.D. in biology from the University of Texas at Austin, where she used DNA to study the relationships among different species. She has worked in both academia and scientific publishing and applies those research skills daily to solving genealogical questions using DNA. Her background makes her uniquely qualified to analyze your DNA results to reveal your family history.
