     Using Newspapers for Social History

April 18, 2023
6:15pm to 8:00pm

Doors open at 5:30 for book sales and socializing.

Articles from old newspapers can breathe life into one’s family history.  Most genealogists have likely found obituaries, and perhaps more in-depth stories about their families among the vast collection of online newspapers collections.  This presentation will focus on taking a further step to flesh out often overlooked stories, and facts that may provide clues to more historical records.  There will also be an overview of the pitfalls of newspaper search, and how to overcome the problems with Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

Judy Janes, past president of the Ventura County Genealogical Society, returns to our society to provide us with her successful strategies which have helped her and her peers expand upon the social history of her ancestors.  Join us this month for this very informative presentation as to how you can learn more about your ancestors!

Sharon Martin and her team will have used books for your research available for you to purchase before the meeting.  10% Discount on all books over $2.00 – list of books.

The meeting will be held in the Thousand Oaks Library in the Community Room. If you are not a member and would like more information, please email CVGSEvents20@gmail.com.
